Getting Started
A quick guide to importing your first product file with Portaim.
1. Create Your Account
Go to app.portaim.com/register and sign up with your email. No credit card required during beta. You'll get access to all features immediately.
2. Upload Your File
From the dashboard, click New Import and drop your CSV, XLSX, or XLS file. Portaim supports files up to 10,000 rows.
If your file has multiple sheets, you can pick which one to import. You can also specify which row contains the column headers if it's not the first row.
3. Map Columns to Shopify Fields
Portaim analyzes your column headers and sample data, then suggests which Shopify field each column maps to. You'll see three types of matches:
- Auto-matched (green) — high-confidence matches applied automatically
- AI-suggested (purple) — suggestions from AI that need your confirmation
- Unmapped (gray) — columns that need manual assignment or can be skipped
If you import from the same supplier regularly, save the mapping as a supplier template. Next time, Portaim applies it automatically.
4. Review and Fix Validation Issues
After mapping, Portaim runs 40+ Shopify-specific validation rules against your data. Issues are shown by severity:
- Errors — must be fixed before export (e.g. missing required fields, invalid status values)
- Warnings — recommended to fix but won't block export (e.g. missing SEO descriptions)
Portaim offers several ways to fix issues:
- Auto-fix — one-click fixes for common problems (formatting, casing, trimming)
- Value mapping — bulk-replace patterns across your data (e.g. map "enabled" → "active")
- AI suggestions — AI-generated corrections for complex issues
- Manual editing — edit individual cells directly in the preview table
5. Export Your Products
Once all errors are resolved, you have two export options:
- Download CSV — get a clean, Shopify-formatted CSV file to import manually via Shopify Admin
- Export to Shopify — push products directly to your connected Shopify store via the API
6. Connect Your Shopify Store (Optional)
To use direct Shopify export, connect your store:
- Go to Settings in the app
- Enter your store's
.myshopify.comdomain - Click Connect Store
- Authorize on Shopify's confirmation page
- You'll be redirected back to Portaim with the connection active
You can disconnect your store at any time from Settings. Portaim requests only the permissions it needs: product read/write, inventory management, and file uploads.
7. Supplier Templates
If you regularly import from the same supplier, save your column mapping as a template. On your next import, select the template and Portaim will pre-fill all the mappings — no manual work needed.
Templates are managed from the mapping step. You can create, rename, and delete templates as needed.
